Iceland home dining

Then when Icelanders think it's summer, they start grilling as they call it, mostly lamb meat and potatoes, maybe some hot dogs, for the kids. it is usually a salad with cucumbers and tomatoes, but sometimes I go further to the complexion of the salat.

Skyline Reykjavik.

When you walk by the sea in Reykjavik, there are mostly two things that you or I could call mysterious mountains, at a distance, imagine something, and though I've gone up on both of them, it does not explain the mystery, on the contrary, it does everything more complicated.

About Daði or Dadilisto

Daði Guðbjörnsson

Alter ego DADILISTO

I was born in Reykjavik: May 12, 1954. Grow up Kópavogur close to Reykavik, which was mostly built by refugees, who were not allocated land in Reykjavík for political reasons. Good time for children to play in half builded houses, or go to a small shelter and listen to the communist.
When I was 12 y.o. I decided to become a painter and, as my father resisted, it would not turn back.
After I have learnd Carpentry to make my father happy, I went to The school of Arts and Crafts, and ended up learning experimental art and new art media, I could take all the risks, I had lernd very practical profession to be able to make a living. I did not get started with creating so called “New media”, but began do painting with the good old oil colours. I was a part of movement in the eighties called “New Painting”. I then studied in Amsterdam for a year, mostly of graphic printing, but that time was a great gift for me, since I started working as a professional and have done so mostly since 1983.
I’ve been very lucky! I was one of the first to do, so called “New Panting” in Iceland, this promotion drew attention and I started selling my art works and could make a living in a decent life, all the time until the lucky famous “collapse” of the banks in Ieland, but at that time people mostly have to use their money in pay-as-you-go debt created by our economic system in Iceland, probably one of the worst in the world.
After that crash, I have been doing some extra work: teaching, city walk with tourist and so on, I have alsow been having pepole visiting my studio with some home-made food. But also received a grants.gov support forbig exhibition in Art museum: Kjarvalsadir in 2011. This period has been nice, always good to get new challenges especially if one manages to take advantage of them. I recently had an exhibition of Mokka Kaffi in Reykjavik hat was successful.
I have been doing Sahajayoga for many years and have volunteered to teach and introduce.

This is a selfportrait as Iceland in the end of the period that I would call “The New Painting”

The spring has come to us, here at the end of the world, we have pulled out the cooking grill.
Good to start grillnseason with trout and couscous salad.
It's cold we have to eat inside, but only about 10-15 that you can eat outside  every summer.

Identity of Icelanders in terms of food is most propably the lamb meat, the sheep  has endured in the country for centuries. One version of lamb meat is smoked as we put on flatbread.
With this we drink, malt extact drink and orange fizzy soft drink mix together, specaly at Christmas and give tourists if they want something Icelandic.
As well we deal with painting  this half-wild house animal.

The simple food of my childhood was traditional Icelandic food, a delicious rice potage and slátur, rice is boiled in milk with raisins, and cinnamon sugar sprinkled over, but the slátur is like the Scottish haggis. We like to cook this food every now and then.

We can offer old-fashioned Icelandic food.

Refreshing from the north

Refreshing from the north.

When the wind is fresh from the north, it's better to be indoors and cook shells and french fries, first when I saw this kind food, I was not  familiar to this, comming from homogeneity of Icelandic food culture in the 1980's, I was in Belgium as a young artist and did not know much about the food traditions of Europe, now I just know what I know little.

It's not often there is beautiful Snow Cover on trees here in Reykjavik, not even at Christmas. But this morning, it was as as good as it gets in Iceland, and the turists continue to take pictures of the orange house.

Fusion from Christmas leftover.

Smoked lambmeat is a typical Christmas food in Iceland, usually eaten with baked white sauce with potatoes, green beans and red cabbage.
But I like using it instead of smoked pork, here it is a pasta dish with cream and cheese. Icelanders love; cream and cheese and mushrooms, but that's not necessarily what I use a lot in my cooking, but still I am an ICElander.

Gleðilegt Sumar. Happy summer.

Gleðilegt sumar.
Samkvæmt gamla Íslenska tímatalinu er sumardagurin fyrsti í dag, það eru ekki allir samála um að sumarið sé raunverulega komið, enda er veðrið ekki alltaf vísbending um að svo sé.

Happy summer.
According to the old Icelandic calendar,it is the summerens first day to day, it is not all all people here agree that the summer is really here and now, as weather is not always summer kind of. We Don't Mind.

At that time as it crawls.

At that time as it crawls.

When you are young the time is unlimited resource than will later be.

The first picture is from the early years, the background of clock dials plate is the night and impatient expression in painting and motif applied to the packaging of candy letter.

At the center of the clock dials plate is cloudy and clock refer pointing watcheth true behind of live in the green depths.

In the last painting, time has turned into the sun we are always measuring and create any ideas, but should be the source of life that we enjoy not just measure.

Natural Congress.

Sun at Thingvellir.

Thingvellir is the place that Icelandic people had the ancient parliament. It is beauty that draws me to Thingvellir, this beauty of natural  is linked to the creation of  the land in time, how the the wether writes his poetry with water and ligth, as it just one poet who is the creator of the universe.

Ever since "Economic collapse" the nation has been in a kind of stagnation, a large part of the population had to face that there was nothing like we had been told, people just got  huge financial losses and most have little faith in the government or community organizations, this group was protesting in front of the Parliament in Reykjavik for many years.

Many people are still unhappy with the corruption in politics and economy.

At Thingvellir is a man standing on the center of the earth by tectonic theory one raft belongs America and new world, but other to the old world with Europe leading old values, so to speak.

It is the beauty that prevails, despite all the conflicts in the world.

BÚRFELL. / FOOD MOUNTAIN.

BÚRFELL.
Fjöll á Íslandi fá oft nafn sitt frá einhverju sem líkist því í formi.
Búrfell fær nafnið vegna þess að það líkist formi  húsa sem maturinn var geymdur í gamla daga.
Þessi mynd er að fara á sýningu í Galleri Fold.
Blönduð tækni Ljósmynd og olíumálverk.

FOOD MOUNTAIN
Mountains in Iceland often get names for something that resembles them in form.
Búrfell given the name because it resembles the form of old houses that food was stored in.

Puffin national hero Iceland. Lundin þjóðhetja Islendinga.

Stundum þú vilt gera eitthvað fallegt fyrir þann sem þú elskar, þessa grafíkmynd (1997) gerði ég fyrir konuna mína, ég man ekki hvers vegna lundinn varð fyrir valinu   til að tjá ást mína, en vegir ástarinnar eru óransakanlegir.

Það voru ekki fjármála snillingar, banka starfsmen, stjórnmálamenn eða verkalýðsforysta sem björguðu efnahag Íslands. Það voru ferðamenn sem fóru að koma í stórum hópum eftir gosið í Eyjafjallajökli.
Nú hefur  lundinn orðið eins konar táknmynd ferðamannastraumsins, svo nýja grafíkmyndin er meira eins og tjáningá  Íslandi nútímans.
Það voru ekki fjármála snillingar, banka starfsmen, stjórnmálamenn eða verkalýðsforysta sem björguðu efnahag Íslands. Það voru ferðamenn sem fóru að koma ég stórum hópum eftir gosið i Eyjafjallajökli.

Sometimes you want to make something beautiful for whom you love, this print (1997) I made for my wife, I do not remember why this puffin was chosen to express my love, but, expression of love is something probably incomprehensible.

It was not financial geniuses, bank employees, politicians or labor leaders who saved the economy of Iceland. There were tourists began to arrive in large groups after the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

Now the puffin has becomme like a national bird, so the new print is more like my expression for Iceland to day.

Matur og þjóðerni. Food and nationality.

It is difficult to talk about food with a certain nationality. What we call Icelandic food is usually any specifics related to the storage of food. We got our school in cooking from Denmark, Lambalærið (lamb leg) is our version of a traditional Danish roasted pork with a crisp rind, etc.
In the piture here here , I combine my two passions, cooking and painting.
My painting is not very Icelandic, not that I know of, nor are they international these are pictures of my experience and knowledge, my approach to make life more interesting .
